The Pioneers of Ozone Therapy
The Pioneers of Ozone Therapy

Have you ever thought about the fresh, unique smell that comes after a storm? That’s ozone. It’s a natural wonder, but it’s also the basis of a strong healing tradition. We at OzonMed Wellness Clinic are proud to continue this sacred and scientific tradition that goes back hundreds of years.

Ozone therapy is used in more than 50 countries today, and more than 30,000 healthcare professionals around the world support it. But how did this amazing molecule go from being “a smell in the air” to one of the most promising methods of integrative medicine? Let’s talk about its amazing journey, which was shaped by scientific curiosity, compassionate care, and faithful stewardship. This journey still guides our work today.

Ozone: From Lightning to Living

What is ozone (O3), and how does its healing power show how nature works? Ozone is a beautiful example of how nature shows God’s design. The Catatumbo Lightning flashes almost 1.2 million times a year in the sky over Venezuela. This helps the ozone layer, which protects the Earth. This strange “smelling gas” hinted at a deeper purpose in creation long before modern science figured out what it was.

In 1785, Dutch physicist Martinus Van Marum noticed a strange smell while working with static electricity. This was the beginning of the story of ozone. In 1840, German chemist Christian Friedrich Schönbein officially named it “ozone” (Greek for “to smell”), which paved the way for its future use in medicine.

Early Medical Use of Ozone Therapy: A Lost Frontier

By the end of the 1800s, ozone was a part of public health.

  • Ozone was utilized for water purification as early as 1870.

  • The first medical book about ozone therapy in the U.S. came out in 1885.

  • Nikola Tesla, an inventor, had patented an ozone generator by 1896 and started making devices that could help people.

  • Doctors used ozone on the battlefield to treat infected wounds during World War I.

  • Ozone was used in dental care starting in 1932, and by the 1940s, it was known for its ability to heal wounds.

Even though ozone therapy was used in the past, antibiotics and industrial medicine made people less interested in it. But it never really went away; instead, it kept changing in important parts of the world.

Modern Medical Ozone: A Global Renaissance

Germany and Russia: Strongholds of Science

In 1957, Dr. Joachim Hänsler made the first modern medical ozone generator, which changed ozone therapy forever. This innovation made it possible for people to use it safely and correctly in a new way. Continuing in research, Dr. Hans Wolff made more progress in the field in the 1970s by coming up with autohemotherapy methods.

Russia also began testing ozone therapy in the 1970s, mostly with early animal studies in Nizhny Novgorod. Doctors were already using medical ozone in heart surgeries by 1979. In the 1980s and early 1990s, Russian doctors started using it to ozonate blood, help people recover from surgery, and treat burns. National ozone conferences started in 1992 to bring together researchers from different fields to talk about their work on ozone. In the middle of the 2000s, Russia was one of the few countries that officially allowed ozone therapy in many fields, such as dermatology, gynecology, traumatology, neonatology, and burn care.

Cuba: A Model for Integrative Medicine

The National Center for Scientific Research in Cuba started looking into the feasibility study of ozone therapy in 1974. This was the first time Cuba got involved with the treatment. By the middle of the 1980s, select Cuban medical centers were starting to use clinical application of ozone therapy in their work transforming integrative care. The first National Congress on ozone therapy was held in the country in 1988, which sparked even more interest. This momentum led to the opening of Cuba’s official Ozone Research Center in 1992.

Since then, ozone therapy has become an important part of Cuban medicine. It is used in many areas, including pediatrics, dermatology, neurology, and cancer care. Cuba is different because it is dedicated to providing holistic, affordable healthcare. Cuba has shown the world that ozone therapy can work and be affordable, especially when it is part of a strong public health system. They did this by combining modern science with integrative methods.

Spain & The Madrid Declaration

The Madrid Declaration on Ozone Therapy was a turning point in 2010. This declaration, led by AEPROMO and the International Scientific Committee on Ozone Therapy (ISCO3), is still the best example of safe and ethical ozone practice around the world. It is updated every five years and translated into more than ten languages. This brings together experts from around the world and makes sure that everyone uses the same, scientifically sound method. Following these internationally recognized protocols is a big part of OzonMed’s promise to provide safe, evidence-based care.

Why It Matters for Filipinos

Ozone therapy is still a new field in the Philippines, and sadly, not all providers follow evidence-based guidelines. At OzonMed, we believe that Filipinos deserve more than just the latest health fads. They deserve care that is proven, useful, and tailored to their needs.

That’s why we combine internationally accepted protocols with a thorough understanding of the Filipino healthcare system. This method lets us put patient safety first while still getting real, evidence-based results. We are committed to doing more than just following global standards. We also want to actively help with research and responsible growth of ozone therapy in our area.

Ozone therapy keeps showing that it can help with many health problems, including pain relief, inflammation reduction, immune system strengthening, and detoxification. We think that every Filipino should feel safe, seen, and supported as they heal.
